Events and Workshops“T” Events (T for Technology and for Tea)
The “T” Events (T for Technology and for Tea!) were community events where specific topics were featured as they related to technology. For example: The Garden “T” featured information on how to access gardening information and seed catalogues on the internet. One of our E-Growth participants, Linda Greene, a greenhouse operator, told of her discoveries of how technology could be used in her business. The premise was that if people realized how technology related to topics that interested them, they would be more receptive to exploring technology. Tea was served for the afternoon break.
Creativity “T” - July 11, 2006 – Facilitated by Charlie Parslow. Developing the ability to look at the ordinary and make it extraordinary by using technology to creatively enhance your life, relationships, business and community! flyer
Digital "T" (3) – June 13/2006, November 14/2006, June 5/2007 – Facilitated by representatives from PhotoGraphics. This was a very popular workshop where participants brought their digital cameras in and learned how to use them and how to manage their photos on the computer. flyer
Garden "T" (2) August 11/2005, March 27/2007 - Very well attended workshops where participants and community members learned how integral ICT can be to gardening. flyer
Skate "T" March 8/2006 /Alternate Education Class - The Kiwanis Enterprise Centre is home to the local high school Alternate Education Class. This “T” invited them to a skating party on the adjacent speed skating oval, and to explore skating/sporting websites in the computer lab.
The E-Growth Business Workshops highlighted technological methods, solutions and opportunities.
Business in the Peace Country (2) – September 27/2005, June 20/2006 - Local businesswoman, Gail Briggs, facilitated this workshop. Her path to entrepreneurial success is a powerful and empowering story. Participants enjoyed and were inspired by her presentations. flyer
Entrepreneurship and Business Planning Business Planning is a specialty of the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre. These were well received workshops that were requested often. Facilitated at first by Frances Armstrong of School District #59, later workshops were facilitated in-house by ‘The E Team’; Anna Bridges, Linda Studley and Karen Hills . Working as a team, these facilitators added ‘Introduction to Entrepreneurship; to the session. In addition, a business planning workshop was hosted specifically for the youth in the YO!360 Program.
Business Planning (5) – July 19/2005, Feb 17/2006 (with YO!360 Program) , February 21/2006, October 5/2006 – Facilitated by Frances Armstrong. May 24/2007 – Facilitated by ‘The E Team’. Careers & Technology (2) October 25/2005, May 30/2006 – Facilitated by Job Search and Support Services, this workshop offered the following components: Overview of career planning, exploring your interests, exploring the net – career search, and education/training requirements. flyer
Conflict Resolution in the Workplace - November 9/2006 – Facilitated by James Klassen of Rubix Claims & Mediation. At this workshop, participants learned skills to improve workplace communication, discovered the art of asking the right questions, applied skill through short role playing activities and developed basic skills for resolving conflicts. flyer
Entrepreneurial Leadership – December 5/2006 - Facilitated by Garry Oker, this workshop covered Myths & World View, Leadership & Community Change, New Business Model, and Technology in Leadership from an Aboriginal perspective. flyer
Women and Business – October 18/2007 – Facilitated by the powerful team of Joyce Lee, Jessie Drew and Jennifer Singer, this workshop explored motivational, inspirational and financial issues specific to women and business. This workshop was held in conjunction with Small Business Week. flyer
In addition to Open Houses and the “T” Events, several other events and workshops were held that were of interest to the community as well as to E-Growth Participants.
Appreciation/Awards Events - Participants were presented with certificates and cheques ($100 was awarded to selected participants in recognition of their accomplishments through the E-Growth Community Project and their achievements in entrepreneurship and ICT training). Asset Mapping: Asset mapping is a unique and effective way to discover and chart the many positive attributes of a community or organization in a way that encourages positive group participation. Aboriginal Asset Mapping – May 16/2007 & Aboriginal Asset Mapping: The Next Step – September 11/2007 During these two sessions community members, community and regional service organization representatives and E-Growth participants created a context map of assets available in the Aboriginal Community, and explored ways to optimize their effective use. flyer
Asset Mapping/Community – February 11/2005 This asset mapping session was held at the outset of the E-Growth Project to ascertain the assets, networks and infrastructure which could be incorporated into the project plan .
E-Growth Launch – June 30/2005 - Partnering with the “What’s Cooking” project, which was also celebrating its launch, E-Growth held the official launch of this pilot project. Widely advertised and well attended, this launch introduced the E-Growth project to the community and registered several participants. flyer
Family History Workshop - Dec 9, 2005 – During this workshop, facilitated by Pat Wonnacot, opportunities were explored to enhance family history research skills. Issues addressed included: where to get the information you need, what is relevant information, and internet sites and locations for family information. A question and answer period allowed participants to fully benefit from this informative workshop. flyer
Kiwanis Trade Show 2006 & 2007 – The Kiwanis Trade Show is an annual event where businesses and other organizations man booths to promote awareness of their goods or services. Thousands of people pass through the Trade Show each year. E-Growth Community Project was represented both years, with participants actively assisting in the manning of the booths. This was an opportunity to celebrate past success and to encourage prospective participants to pursue new ventures and discover their ICT potential.
Leadership & Management Workshop (2) – August 16/2005, March 28/2006 – Facilitated by Charlie Parslow, these workshops offered skills development in: communications, listening skills, time management, workplace dynamics, goal setting, and team building. flyer
Computer workshops took participants through everything from how to turn the computer on to creating websites. Workshops were scheduled to reflect the needs and requests from the community and E-Growth Participants. The success of these workshops, along with the efficacy of the Custom Guide online tutorials, launched many participants into exciting new career and educational paths.
Basic Computers (4) July 5/2005, February 7/2006, April 24/2007 – Facilitated by Vern Brisbin of Software Emporium (local computer store). September 14/2006 – Facilitated by Patrick Neis of Software Emporium. This workshop covered the very basics of computer operation. Identifying computer components, technology terms, hardware vs. software, turn on a computer and monitor, using optical drives, use the mouse, and keyboarding or typing skills. flyer
Business Marketing/ Publisher (4) – November 8/2005, June 8/2006 - Facilitated by Richell Swartz in the Northern Lights College computer lab. Participants were introduced to the Microsoft Publisher program and designed and created business cards, flyers and brochures. January 9/2007, July 10/2007 – Facilitated by Linda Studley in the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre computer lab. Participants learned the basics of working with Microsoft Publisher by creating business cards. flyer
Internet Research(4) - August 30/2005, April 11/2006, July 31/2006, April 3/2007 - Facilitated by Chad Anderson, of New Harvest Media, internet research introduced participants to the most effective methods of researching on the internet. Participants learned: What is the Internet, What is the World Wide Web, Modems, Browsers and ISP’s, Bandwidth, Types of Internet Access, and Surfing Strategies. flyer
Microsoft Power Point (4) - March 22/2006, April 4/2006, October 24/2006 – Facilitated by Christine Van De Walle. June 19/2007 – Facilitated by Linda Studley. This workshop took participants through the design and creation of an effective Microsoft power point presentation. Free time in the afternoon allowed participants to receive one-on-one assistance with creating their presentation. flyer
Seniors’ Digital Technology Workshop – October 24/2007 – This workshop was facilitated by Trent Ernst of Peace PhotoGraphics. This workshop resulted from requests from seniors who wanted to learn how to use their digital cameras.
Technology How To – January 23/2007 – Facilitated by Vern Brisbin. This workshop familiarized participants with many of the most common technological ‘gizmos and gadgets’ including: iPods, MP3 players, GPS units, cell phones, camera and palm pilots. flyer
Open houses were held to celebrate special events, tying them in with technology and the goals of the project.
Christmas & Computers – December 18/2006 - Community members and participants enjoyed seasonal treats, Christmas sing a longs and a special Christmas and Computers guide to finding all things Christmas on the web. flyer
Open House & E-Presentation - December 6/2005, - Facilitated by John Beauchamp of Pan-Western. Workshop included: Good web design practices, online security, online payment strategies, and marketing online.
New Lab Celebration - August 7/2007 - An open house was held to celebrate the computer lab upgrade. Many people attended, tried out and enjoyed the luxury of the new computers, all with an identical, comprehensive compliment of Microsoft software, wide screen monitors and high speed internet. flyer
An important aspect of E-Growth was the incorporation of volunteerism throughout the project. Participants were encouraged to volunteer by monitoring the Volunteer Dawson Creek listings, and to upgrade their ICT skills so they could then use those skills for the benefit of non profit organizations. To that end, workshops that encouraged networking between participants and non profit organizations were offered.
LIRN BC/ Social Enterprise - January 11/2007. This workshop, facilitated by David LaPage and Scott Graham of ENP and LIRN BC (enterprising non profits) discussed the possibilities of social enterprise, how to apply for ENP funding, and how to develop stategies designed to build strong business cases for starting social enterprises. flyer
Tax Forms for Non Profits and Charities – February 15/2007 – Facilitated by Albert Foster, CGA. A workshop of great importance to community organizations, this session dealt with such issues as: Why register as a NPO or charity, the difference in NPO’s and charities, how much is entailed in becoming a charitable organization, how much and what is the extra reporting for Charities, the advantages of having charitable status versus NPO, what are the best practices for reporting, losing status, board liability, who can receive money from a NPO or charity, special taxation issues, and financial reporting and rebates. flyer
Volunteer Management – April 20/2007 – Partnering with the ‘20 th Anniversary Celebration Project’, E-Growth hosted this workshop to assist community organizations and their volunteers better understand the dynamics of volunteer management. Facilitated by Margaret Jones Bricker of the Canadian Cancer Society and Connie Patterson of the Dawson Creek Exhibition Association, this workshop offered helpful information, hands on activities and excellent networking opportunities. flyer
Many of our workshops dealt with websites. Because of the importance of the website as a unit of information in all online dealings, E-Growth encouraged participants to create their own website to gain a better understanding of this ICT medium and to “stake a claim” to a part of the information highway.

Government Services (3) October 4/2005, Facilitated by Garry Fuhr included: accessing business information through government websites, the E-business connection, doing business with the government and success stories. At these workshops participants learned about: how to connect with Governments online, levels of Government – who does what, taxation and licensing online, and Governmental supply and service opportunities. flyer
Intro to Web Design (3) November 22/2005, July 6/2006, December 12/2006 - Facilitated by Chad Anderson. In this popular workshop participants learned about websites by creating their own ‘Tripod’ website. Issues addressed included: what is the web, what is HTML, and easy tools for web publishing. flyer
