Rose Aastveit

"We don’t know what life is going to bring us each day but through knowledge, understanding, enquiring and applying we can deal with those moments with a little more ease. The Kiwanis Enterprise Centre has a great leadership team and are committed to helping people build their skills to develop growth by creating possibilities and opportunities in various programs and workshops. The demand for business professionals is huge in today’s world. Kiwanis plays an integral role in assisting people to develop a broad range of employability and life skills as well as gain knowledge needed to be competitive in the current and future labour market. It has been very positive for me in working with a group of people from Kiwanis Enterprise Centre in building a strong foundation in the community. The Kiwanis project manager Doris Brocke and I first met in October of 2006 and it has been the best chance meeting that resulted in total support of my proud Métis heritage.

Doris was instrumental and worked tirelessly to apply for funding to create Métis Culture project and was successful. The project was a ten month project which provided an opportunity to gain work experience for 4 EI eligible individuals by providing communication between Métis and non Métis people to create an awareness, and promote and preserve Métis heritage and culture. The effort and on going support has been outstanding.

2007 Métis talent show was a huge event that invited Métis people from far and wide to showcase their talent and culture. People travelled from Alberta, Saskatchewan and throughout BC to participate or be in the audience. There was a packed house of spectators and performers. The talent show meant a lot to me. The desire to have such a show has been a dream of mine for many years. The competitions in Vocals, Fiddling and the Red River Jig have been the talk around town and people are asking "When is the next one?" It takes a tremendous amount of work, dedication, commitment, organization and passion for your culture. Kiwanis group has been the biggest support and understands the importance of building relationships between Métis, First Nations and non aboriginal Community. I am honoured to know and network with people like you. I give thanks to the Creator each morning upon rising and each evening before sleeping for your encouragement, support and respect.

Long live the Métis.

Nee-chewah-gunak = My Partners

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and my jiggin’ feet

“I just want to thank the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre and the E-Growth Project for the tremendous help and inspiration in getting us going with these projects.  When I took the web-building course in the spring, I really had no idea it was going to take me as far as it has.

I have my own site now, and have helped build/set up several others... with more coming soon.  This really helps us all connect better with others and get our thoughts and products out to the world.  In a northern region such as we live in, this is more and more important so that people can learn about who we are and what we have to offer! I also want to thank the Enterprise Centre for all of the help and encouragement I have received in setting up and working towards publishing my story, 'Vaere Deg Selv'.  Everyone has been so positive, knowledgeable, and full of enthusiasm, that it has been easy to learn and work with you all!  I look forward to many more enjoyable hours of working together and the continuation of profiling our city of Dawson Creek, and the surrounding Peace Country region, through the sorts of projects you support!  This is a tremendous opportunity for the residents of Dawson Creek and area... we must let more people in on this.”

“A note of appreciation to the folks at the Enterprise Centre. When I heard of the program at the Enterprise Centre to help seniors learn about computers I thought why not give it a try.

When I explained that I did not have a computer and that I did not know how to turn one on they said "no problem, welcome".

I still remember my first day, I was booked for 1 hour , but after 45 minutes I said “whoa information overload.” Again it was "no problem see you next week"..."OK".My first lesson was on Feb 16/06 and I bought a computer Mar 8/06,got Shaw high-speed internet Mar 13/06 and by May 18/06 they

said get out of here, no not really, what they said was if I had any problems to email, phone or come in which I appreciated...and I do drop in...

Some of the things I learned includes the following:

  • How to turn on the computer
  • Send emails, create folders to hold emails and how to move same.
  • How to copy and paste
  • Set my own internet home page  (so I'm where I want to be when I click on)
  • What to do if I have a freeze up
  • Change time and dates including leap years
  • Importance of updates..for Windows, Norton, HP, etc...
  • How to defrag and why I should also compress
  • If one click doesn't work try two clicks
  • How to access my email when away from home
  • Helped me set up my own Web Site
  • How to do a screen capture and how it send it
  • Had to get a Hotmail address so I could be taught Messenger (there must be a lot of guys called John Connor because it took many changes to get my address).

On my own after some direction I've downloaded a lot of stuff I needed to go to and be able to open and read such as HPI - Google earth-Adobe reader-PPviewer, etc…

Thanks for all your help.”

Beth Craig

“I love being part of the E-Growth Project. Before coming to the Kiwanis Enterprise Center I had some self taught computer knowledge; enough to write a paper for College, answer my e-mail and surf the web.

The computer program “Custom Guide” has let me work at my own speed and fill in a huge amount of gaps. There are friendly staff available to help me through those little glitches and being part of E-Growth has given me the opportunity to participate in some great workshops.

With the knowledge I gained from the program, I have made a successful PowerPoint Presentation, created my own webpage and had the opportunity to attend several informative workshops. I am still enrolled in the program and continue learning something new each day.”

Beth completed Computer Basics and improved her skills with Access and Outlook 2003. She created a power point presentation and promotional materials including the "Garden T" informational booklet.

Betty Foster

"I am still working on the E-Growth program and my typing skills. Having injured myself at work I could not return to my previous job of over 30 years. Doing research, I discovered that in any other job I would need computer and typing skills. As I was completely stupid on computers a Job Search Counselor told me about the E-Growth program. I was scared of computers but the staff at E-Growth gives me the help, encouragement and confidence I needed to tackle learning computer skills. I now have the confidence that I can take on my new career with my computer knowledge.

I have used the technology in my personal life. I now know how to send an email with an attachment. I wasn’t even capable of doing research on the internet before I took the E-Growth course. I can even do fun things like working on Photo Shop and enter the MacDonald’s online contest. What also came in handy for me is if I’m having trouble doing something on the computer at home I can go online to Custom Guide. I review the lesson that that pertains to what I’m doing.

I will continue to use my learning from E-Growth. Using a computer has opened a whole new world for me. I may not be a master at the computer, but every day I learn something new. What is really nice is that the staff at E-Growth is there for you, answering questions, letting you practice your new skills on them and giving you a positive attitude and the encouragement you need."

Betty has completed Custom Guide Courses on: Computer Basics, Word 97, Word 2007, Excel 2000, and Windows XP. Betty has improved her typing to 40 words per minute using the Mavis Beacon typing program.

Ginny Gladish

"I really appreciated getting a basic understanding of how computers work and a better knowledge of the basics of Windows. It has resulted in my having more confidence in working things out for myself on the computer without thinking I’m going to “blow it up”!

I was able to get a website running for our Newcomer’s Group for Women after the web seminar. I am having much greater success with taking pictures after the digital camera seminar. I feel better able to create good flyers, pamphlets and business cards. If I were employed, I’m sure my employer would be delighted!

The staff at the Enterprise Centre and the instructors were wonderfully friendly, encouraging, and supportive. I felt immediately comfortable with them and was very appreciative of the fact that they were willing to listen to the concerns I had about running my newcomers group and delighted to implement their helpful advice."

Ginny not only created her own website, she created one for the Dawson Creek New Comers group.

She also created business cards and stationary for the New Comers Group.

"I couldn't have made my service  possible  without  the help of  the staff  at the Enterprise Centre.  They have given  me the opportunity  to  prove  to  myself and  to  others  that  if  you  work  hard  at  your  dreams  they can  come  true.   So just  let  me  say  thank you  very much  to  all  the  staff  at  the  Enterprise Centre  for  all  your  help  and support.   You've  really  helped  me  alot  so  again,  let  me  just  say  thank you."

Pat found an opportunity and with a little help he turned it into a business. Starting with lawn cutting, he has expanded to repair work, snow removal and concrete and gravel work. E-Growth helped Pat set up and learn to use an email account and assisted him in creating promotional material but the idea and the hard work was, and is, all Pat!

Sherry Hiebert

"I have changed my career from cooking and cleaning to a receptionist – so I have learned a lot. Staff was very helpful and encouraging, always had an answer for any question. I have improved my computer skills, learned Microsoft Publisher, Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook and also boosted my typing skills.

I went from not even owning a computer until 2 years ago – to being able to make templates and web pages. I think the staff are the most encouraging people I have ever met, always helping you to better yourself and skills, very supportive! I have learned more here in 3 months than I did in 11 years in school. Thanks so much.”

Darlene Holovaci

"Being a cook was something I always enjoyed. I had never considered leaving the profession.

Due to health problems, repetitive tasks and being on my feet all day are things I am unable to do. I had to completely rethink my career.

I gathered all my ducks in a row then concluded I had way too many ducks.

I came to the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre having never really worked with computers.

I have learned many new skills using Custom Guide. My strengths are recognized and encouraged at the center. My life has changed and continues to change daily, the sky is the limit."

Having learned Computer Basics , Word 2003, and Power Point 2003, Darlene has gone on to further her training at Northern Lights College . From someone who was unsure how to turn on a computer, Darlene reports that she now receives compliments on how well she works with computers during her college courses. Darlene now not only has goals, she has the tools and skills to reach them.

Kay Kettner

"Hi. My name is Kay and I am part owner of a brand new business. Our name is Wired Wellness. We have a specialized biofeedback machine that is able to assist our clients in reducing their stress through finding the imbalances in their body and helping them overcome those imbalances. It works much like a virus scanner on a computer works.

Our computer houses a Quantum biofeedback package that takes some basic computer skills, and there was my biggest challenge! I have worked shift work in the health care industry for years. My computer skills were very poor.

To improve these skills I worked on my own with only frustration as the result. I checked with the college and the cost was high and the time frames did not fit for me. I tried having young family members teach but that was hopeless. I am fifty+ and I understood typewriters and filing cabinets that stood in the corner, so they spoke a different language than I. And then… one of the ladies that I work with, who was also struggling with her basic skills, told me about the Enterprise Centre. I cannot say enough about the staff and the programs. It’s a perfect fit for anyone in my shoes. I was in Victoria this year taking advanced courses for our business. The instructor said all of us did fine but the ones with computer skills were catching on so much faster. My skills have really improved since I started the course this spring (2007) but I have a long way to go yet. I plan to go back to Victoria and get my Specialist Certification. Before this course I would never have had the confidence or the skills to ever try for these goals that are now within my grasp!

Speaking from my heart it has given me the skills and confidence that is giving our new business a start it didn’t have before I discovered the Enterprise Centre and this wonderful program.”

Kay has attended many E-Growth workshops and has worked on her computer skills with Computer Basics and Windows XP. She has also designed a business card.

Alice Langlois

I would like to tell you a little bit about what the E-Growth Project has done  in my life.

I first heard about the E-Growth Project when I was working as the supervisor/technician for a local historical documentary. As a Job Creation Project, the employees were there to make the transition between different careers, reentering the workforce, or updating their employable skills. As we were on very strict deadlines, those employees who lacked basic computer skills fell behind rapidly, while others were excited to progress to advanced videography and editing skills. The E-Growth Project filled the gap for us. A few of my employees would disappear once a week and come back to work with confidence and the ability to participate in the work with the rest of the team. I was amazed at their progress and a little curious too.

Everyone that I sent over to E-Growth commented that E-Growth’s success was a combination of things. It was the staff and everything that they brought to the project, as well as the software, which taught the student in a friendly and measurable way. The tutorials are short, and the many quizzes help to give the student the confidence that they are actually learning something.

After my contract with the JCP ended, I went over to the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre, curious about what the E-Growth Project could do for me. I was exploring the possibility of starting my own business in the field of Visual Design (Graphics and Media Promotion as well as Web Design as an extension of promotional packages). I was totally surprised at what E-Growth could offer me.

My first impression, of course, was the staff. They are a unique team. Each person brings something different to the whole, while working well together as a unit. Each staff member was kind and welcoming. They made me feel like I could ask any question, and I mean “ANY” question and it didn’t matter if I had asked that question five times before, and forgot the answer again. I have great respect for them, and consider them a valuable and friendly resource in my efforts to start my own business. Unfortunately for me, I came in at the tail end of the project. I progressed half way through the Excel tutorials. I found them easy to follow and forgiving of someone who is very “right brained”. I would recommend the tutorials to others in my community, and plan to take advantage of the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre’s offer to keep supplying the tutorials for a nominal fee. It is nice that what has started in the E-Growth Project will continue to benefit many others in the community.

During my experience with E-Growth, I found that the staff not only provided computer help and one on one advice in starting my business, they also went the extra mile and organized and facilitated many business oriented workshops. These workshops combined valuable information with opportunities for networking with fellow entrepreneurs and allowed me to make meaningful connections with individuals and organizations in my community. In the short time that I was involved with E-Growth (about two months) I attended the following workshops:

  Starting Your Own Business

  Aboriginal Mapping

  Women in Business

Development of the final E-Growth Website (a two day workshop)

All considered, E-Growth has made a major impact in my life. Although I would consider myself a professional in my community who is comfortable with using a computer, E-Growth has taught much more than computer skills. The people there have invested in ME, helping me to develop the confidence and skills that I will need to start my own business. They have invested in my community, giving everyone the opportunity to become functional and connected in a very technical world. For some that has meant acquiring the computer skills to make them more employable. For others, it has meant even more than this, helping them to connect with family and friends over the Internet, exchanging photographs and letters, or helping them promote a cause that they believe in by developing their own websites.

In my mind, the E-Growth Project has been a phenomenal success. I am sorry to see it end, but hopefully it will be implemented in other communities.

A heartfelt thank you Anna, Linda, Karen, Doris and Chad!

It’s been great!

"I was a part of the E-growth program back in 2006. I came in as a part of a group called YO! 360°. The workshop was on how to build a website; it was very interesting and informative. I am now still a part of E-growth, only now I am doing a program called CustomGuide. It takes you through and teaches you many different computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access just to name a few. I love CustomGuide and hope to see it in more venues around the community, and others as well. I have been to other workshops through E-growth also and I believe that it was a very worthwhile project to many people."

Miranda has completed the Computer Basics and Excel 2007 Custom Guide courses and has worked on Access 2003, Quick Books, and Word. Miranda's new skills have helped her gain full time employment.

"I find Custom Guide a very user friendly program. Certain components are covered multiple times in different programs. This makes 'remembering' systems much easier. The graphics and use of humour throughout make it a pleasant process even in the most tedious task development areas. The staff are all most helpful and friendly whenever I have questions. No one ever leads me to think that my questions are either stupid or a waste of their time; quite the contrary. Thanks for the opportunity to learn in such a wonderful people-friendly place."

Joan has completed the Access 2003, Excel 2003, and Word 2003 and has worked on Word 2007 and Mac OSX Tiger. Joan is furthering her education in office administration.

James McBeath

“I am impressed and grateful for the seminars I have attended. All were taught in a professional manner without for a minute forgetting the human element. There is a certain warmth about the center which your staff members emanate as well as displaying eagerness and enthusiasm while sharing their expertise with individuals who are willing to learn.

I find it difficult to choose what I liked most in the courses. The learning comes one step at a time and if I were to choose my favorite it would not be the content alone. It would be those breakthroughs you share with the instructor when you both know everything taught before has come together and you know you will go home and apply it with clarity.

Small achievements are applauded with enthusiasm, which stimulates an eagerness to learn and expand ones boundaries."

"The E-Growth Community Project helped me by providing one on one tutoring as well as some workshops to show me how to use a computer. I use technology everyday, wife’s business and my personal e-mails etc. Have kids and grand kids and great grandchildren in Florida and Washington. Wife is in networking business and I help her with several hundred customers’ information management."

"Our computers are now central to my life by constantly e-mailing family and friends, information searching, most of my banking and bill paying, etc. Janie needs her computer and phone both going at the same time to do her Mannatech business where she keeps up with several hundred people. We got a high speed wireless network in the house here so both computers and phone all go at the same time. It was only a little over two years ago I took lessons to turn the fool things on and off!

"Since taking the course at the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre I have found myself taking pride in my education again. I am 37 years old, so it's never too late to learn something new.

The course itself is excellent and easy to follow. I like the fact that I may continue the lessons wherever I may be. The centre itself is great because I can easily use the computers all day and accomplish a lot. The staff are also very helpful and provide a pleasant learning atmosphere. Plus the fact that there is no cost for this is a major incentive. Many would like an education or to further education but do not have finances.

What Custom Guide and The Kiwanis Enterprise Centre are accomplishing in this regard is absolutely wonderful…

I thank The Kiwanis Enterprise Centre and the Custom Guide website and strongly recommend others to take advantage of this rare opportunity to enjoy an education with ease."

Gord completed the Computer Basics and Windows XP Custom Guide Courses.
